CURRENT WORLD TEAM MINISTRY IN SURINAME

There are 12 World Team related churches in Suriname

6 Amerindian churches in the interior -- Lawa, Apetina, Palumeu, Tepoe, KwamaIasamutu, Kajote (this last village is actually in French Guiana)

2 Bush Negro churches in the interior -- Wakapoe & Maripasoula (The Wakapoe church was started in Suriname but moved over the border into French Guiana during the revolution of the late '80s. The Maripasoula Church is a daughter church of Wakapoe.)

2 Guyauese Churches in the city of Paramaribo -- Herenhutterstraat & Cleavia. Both have ordained Guyanese pastors

1 Javanese Church in the district of Commewijnwe (across the river from Paramaribo). This church has long been on its own with a Javanese pastor.

1 Dutch Church in the city of Paramaribo -- South Church. This church has long been on it's own. It ministers to multiple cultures of Suriname in the Dutch language.

Beside the above-mentioned churches, World Team is in association with three other churches on the coast: Centrum, Tamareijio & Albina.

PREACHING POINTS

6 on the southeast border on the Lawa River among the Amerindians.

4 in the center of the country by the Suriname River among the Bush Negroes.

TRAINING

All of the churches in the interior are under Indian or Bush Negro leadership. They are in need of continuing training. The Indians are not able to participate in any training opportunities that are provided in the city because of language barriers. Therefore we need to continue providing training for these leaders in the interior.

There is one Bible Camp called Kenepaku, located on the Paloemue River close to the Brazilian border where there is held a one month Bible school every year. This is for anyone who can get to the camp but it is primarily for Apalai Indians in North Brazil. We do train the leaders of the churches in their own villages or we bring the leaders to a chosen village for short term Bible teaching. We are in the process of preparing material to be used in this training that will then be placed in the leaders hands to train their own people.

In the city of Faramaribo, there is a regular course of Bible taught called the Apollos Bible Course. These professors come from Holland for a month. Theses courses are offered at various times throughout the year. In the early days of World Team training was done through TEE & through a resident Bible School program held at the east border town of Albina. The building is still there but is not used any longer by the coastal churches for Bible training.

OUTREACH

The Wayana and Trio Indian Churches do have a burden and a vision for reaching out to other tribes & villages with the gospel. The Trio Churches are the most aggressive in this outreach. They are sending their own people to French Guiana, North Brazil, and within Suriname. The Wayana Church on the eastern border of Suriname is praying about forming a team with believers from the Melejo tribe in French Guiana from the village of Kajote to go to two other un-reached, un-evangelized tribes deep in French Guiana called the Wajapi and the Wajapipuku.

The major part of World Team's investment in the past has been among the interior tribes. Now that these churches are maturing and taking their place of leadership, World Team's participation among the tribes is diminishing. Focus is now turning once again on the city and the Hindustani people.
